Breaking: US Senate Skips CLARITY Act Again, Friday Vote Now In Focus
The official U.S. Senate schedule for Tuesday, August 4 doesn’t include the CLARITY Act, which aims to create a new regulatory structure for the crypto market.
US Senate Excludes CLARITY Act For Today
Instead, senators reconvened at 10:00 a.m and then adjourned till 2:15 p.m. ET Following leader remarks, they are looking to “resume consideration of the motion to proceed to H.R. 6500, vehicle for a Continuing Resolution, post cloture,” according to the Senate Press Gallery. The schedule also notes that “votes are expected” for the nomination of Erica Schwartz to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as a group of 74 en bloc nominations.
The CLARITY Act was not on Tuesday’s agenda even though the Senate Majority Leader, John Thune, just recently said the measure is still on lawmakers’ priority list leading up to the August recess.
Thune said, “We have a bunch of stuff that we have to finish, and we’ll just stay here until we finish it.” When asked about the crypto market structure bill, he added, “I think market structure we’ll get a vote on. Whether we can get on it or not, we’ll see.”
About Friday’s Expected Cloture Vote
Those remarks have kept the momentum going for action this week on H.R. 3633, the CLARITY Act, but no cloture motion has yet been filed on the bill. The Senate would not be able to proceed to a vote on the bill without that extra step.
Crypto analyst Ted Pillows cautioned that lawmakers have little time left before the month-long August recess before the time runs out. He said that “If Senate leadership waits until Wednesday to file cloture, a procedural step required to move the bill forward, the earliest vote would likely be Friday.”
Friday is still the earliest practical day for procedural action on the CLARITY Act, with that timeframe. But for now, the bill is not on the Senate’s official floor schedule, leaving the crypto industry waiting for the next step in Washington.
