The Trump administration is reportedly considering restricting access to Chinese AI models amid the recent hype over Moonshot’s latest Kimi model. This comes as the AI race between the two countries heats up, with key voices in the U.S. raising concerns that China is leading the race and what that could mean.
Trump Administration Considers De Facto Bans On Chinese AI Models
According to an Axios report, part of the Trump administration is reigniting efforts to implement de facto bans on foreign open-source models following the rise of the Chinese model Kimi by Moonshot AI. This also comes amid reports that more U.S. companies are experimenting with Chinese models as they are cheaper and also provide strong performance.
The Kimi K3 model had generated a lot of hype last week following its release, thanks to its coding skills and how it matched up to OpenAI and Anthropic’s latest models. Kimi and other major Chinese models are also gaining a lot of hype for being open-weight, and some are also open-source. Moonshot has revealed that it plans to release the open-source model for Kimi K3 on July 27.
The rise in Chinese AI models has also led to warnings from notable voices in the U.S. who opine that the U.S. is at risk of losing the race to China. As CoinGape reported, former White House Crypto Czar David Sacks warned that the U.S. could lose the AI race.
This came as he noted that the Chinese model Kimi K3 ranked first on the Frontend Code Arena and is scoring at or near the frontier on other benchmarks. “This is concerning,” he said. Meanwhile, CIA Director John Ratcliffe also said that they can’t let China have the technology advantage, citing frontier AI models.
Crypto Traders Bet Against U.S. Banning Chinese Models
Crypto traders are currently betting against the U.S. government removing public access to Chinese AI models. Data from the top prediction market platform Polymarket shows only a 15% chance of this happening.

These crypto traders are also still betting on Anthropic’s model being the best AI at the end of August, with a 91% chance of that happening. There is only a 1% chance that Moonshot’s model gets the highest arena rank.

As the AI race between the U.S. and China heats up, there are also concerns that the AI bubble could soon burst. George Noble, former fund manager at Fidelity, recently said the fallout from an AI bubble bust could be 17x worse than the dot-com crash
