Ledger Launches Android Crypto Device After $93M Hardware Wallet Hack
Highlights
- Ledger unveils Atom, an $849 Android-based crypto device with secure transaction approvals and AI security features
- The launch follows a hardware wallet attack linked to $93M in losses involving physically modified Ledger devices
- Ledger Atom will support Solana applications, secure messaging and AI agent approvals, with deliveries expected in 2027.
After a hardware wallet attack that resulted in $93 million in suspected losses, Ledger has announced the release of Atom, its Android-based crypto security device. The company announced the product at its Op3n event in Paris on Thursday and releases are scheduled for 2027. Atom integrates day-to-day applications with hardware-approved transaction validation and extra security against physical tampering.
Ledger Atom Combines Android Apps With Secure Crypto Approvals
Ledger Atom runs applications using an Android-based operating system, while a separate secure chip protects private keys and other sensitive information. There is a dedicated approval screen, which is governed by Ledger OS and can’t be tampered with by regular apps.
The device also has a hardware switch for unplugging its camera and microphone. Surrounding the secure components is an active shield, which can identify an open probe or modification attempt, said Ledger.
Atom will also facilitate the functions of Ledger Wallet and the Solana mobile Seeker app, which delivers entry to Solana-based apps. The company will also roll out identity verification, secure messaging, and AI agent approval capabilities on their security platform.
The plans come as part of broader concerns regarding AI risks to cryptocurrency security. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently issued a warning about the potential of AI-powered mathematics to undermine some cryptographic systems within two years.
Ledger Confirms Modified Wallets Were Used in Crypto Theft
The launch comes after an attack using real Ledger hardware wallets that were purchased from merchants in Southeast Asia. Initial reports of the Ledger wallet hack put the losses at a minimum of $86 million, and to as high as $93 million following investigations.
In a Thursday statement, Ledger confirmed that criminals bought authentic wallets and installed hidden components before returning them to distribution. These components stored recovery phrases during the setup process, which enabled attackers to log into wallets with the recovered funds.
Ledger stated that its secure chips, operating system, and internal servers remained uncompromised. The company called it a “localized distribution attack” and stated that it had not been compromised.
The manufacturer asked authorized sellers in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales while it investigated. It also tightened reseller conditions, such as product representation and reseller of returns.
Ledger Atom Reservations Open at $849 Ahead of 2027 Delivery
Ledger is accepting reservations for Atom’s Founders Edition at $849, with a fully refundable $100 deposit. The company estimates deliveries during the second quarter of 2027, although its published schedule may change.
Ledger stated that customers will eventually be able to manage cryptocurrency transactions alongside everyday apps without connecting a second hardware wallet. Some planned features will depend on licensing, certification, and integration work before shipping.
The company is also exploring exchange transaction approvals with Kraken parent Payward and identity verification with Persona. Consequently, its Solana Mobile partnership will bring the Seeker app to Atom when devices begin shipping. However, Ledger has cautioned that Atom remains in development, and reservations are not purchases of finished devices.
