Bitcoin DAT Metaplanet Announces First-Ever Stock Buyback Worth $122.4 Million

Highlights

  • Metaplanet repurchases 73.98 million shares of its Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed stock for JPY 19.30 billion.
  • The Bitcoin treasury company will buy 200 million shares under its new share repurchase program.
  • Metaplanet (3350) stock closed 3.64% lower at 265 JPY on Thursday.

Bitcoin digital asset treasury (DAT) company Metaplanet completed its first-ever share buyback, repurchasing its Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed stock for JPY 19.30 billion ($122.4 million). This accounts for 5.42% of its common shares as part of plans to buy back 14.7% of total shares.

According to an official announcement, Metaplanet made its first-ever repurchase of 73.98 million of its common shares to enhance BPS. The transaction was executed at a JPY 261 share price through the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s off-auction own share repurchase trading system.

This marks the initial execution under its 200 million stock buyback program worth JPY 60 billion authorized by Metaplanet’s board of directors. Under the policy, the company will purchase its shares to enhance capital efficiency and Bitcoin holdings per share (BPS).

Metaplanet decided to use JPY 25.3 billion for stock buyback through an Off-Auction Own Share Repurchase Trading (ToSTNeT-3). This comes after the plan of issuing zero coupon euro-yen denominated convertible bonds with Stock Acquisition Rights due in 2031.

Bitcoin treasury Metaplanet holds 44,000 BTC in total. The company sold 10,000 BTC and purchased 11,000 BTC in Q3 2026. It became the second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder, surpassing Twenty One Capital.

The stock closed 3.64% lower at 265 JPY on October 15. The stock is down more than 13% this month. Meanwhile, MPJPY and MTPLF stocks have surged more than 5% in a month.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin price is trading at $81,089, down nearly 3% over the past 24 hours. The 24-hour low and high were $80,443 and $83,790, respectively. Trading volume has increased by almost 55% ahead of US PPI inflation data and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speech today.
